  18. <p>     When Suzanne Vega's new album, Days of Open Hand, appears
  19. in record stores later this month, the songs will, she says,
  20. "give a sense of resolving the past and looking to the future."
  21. Exhausted after her hugely successful album Solitude Standing
  22. in 1987, the singer-songwriter, 30, took time off and "spent
  23. a lot of time sleeping" before starting to write music again.
  24. She also discovered missing pieces from her past through a
  25. reunion with the father she had last seen when she was three.
  26. "I never knew there was such musical ability in my family,"
  27. says Vega, who learned that a grandmother had been a drummer
  28. in an all-woman band.
